OTTAWAY SAYS POST OFFICE CLOSURE CONSULTATION WAS A
'SHAM'
Richard Ottaway, Conservative MP for Croydon South, has slammed the Post
Office for failing to listen to residents over the proposal to close the
5 branches in Croydon South identified in the Post Office Area Plan announced
in April. The affected branches are:
- Kenley - 84 Godstone Road, Kenley
- Lacey Green - 221 Coulsdon Road, Coulsdon
- Red Deer Parade - 252 Brighton Road, South Croydon
- Station Parade - Sanderstead Road, South Croydon
- Waddon - 337 Purley Way, Croydon
Richard Ottaway says:-
"I have now been informed by the Post Office that all 5 branches
identified for
closure back in April will be closed within the next few weeks. Indeed
some
have closed already. It appears to me that the whole consultation exercise
has
been a sham, the Post Office having made up its mind to close these
local
branches well in advance."
"I am appalled that all the representations made by Conservative
councillors,
Postwatch, customers and myself have been so patently ignored. There
is no
doubt that these closures will disadvantage many elderly customers,
families with
young children and people with disabilities."
"As well as offering customers easy access to post office goods
and services, these
branches had an important role to play in encouraging people to support
their
local shopping parades. Thousands of residents signed petitions and
wrote letters
opposing these closures. That the views of so many residents can be
so readily
dismissed is a disgrace."
