Ottaway tackles 30 ft climbing wall for Scouts

Richard Ottaway, Conservative Member of Parliament for Croydon South recently opened the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the 8th Purley (St Mary's) scout group. (Photographs attached) He kicked off proceedings by making a valiant attempt at the 3o ft high climbing wall which had been especially brought in for the day by the troop. Afterwards Richard said:

'I was absolutely delighted to have been able to take part in the activities which have put on for this weekend's celebrations, although that wall is much harder to climb than it looks!'

'It is tremendous to see so many youngsters involved in scouting here; ranging from the young beavers through to the teenage scouts. It seems a long time since I was putting up tents and cooking in cans, clambering through assault courses and tying knots. Apart from the changes to the uniform the biggest difference seems to be the inclusion of girls in today's scouting.'

'A tremendous amount of time and work is clearly put in by the Leaders in organising all the activities for the young people and it is wonderful to see the enthusiasm and fun that everyone is having. I understand that the Group is hoping to open an Explorers unit soon and I wish them every success with it.'
