PRESS RELEASE
4 March 2002
Tighter firework controls are supported by Croydon South MP
Richard Ottaway, Conservative MP for Croydon South, has indicated his
support for legislation that would tighten the law with respect to the
sale to and use of fireworks by the general public.
Commenting on the proposal Mr Ottaway said:
"Over the past year I have received a considerable increase in
letters from constituents who are concerned about the nuisance caused
by fireworks throughout the year.
"Whilst I don't want to see a total ban on the sale and use of
fireworks, I would like to see the current code of practice, whereby
fireworks are only sold around November 5th and New Year, more strictly
adhered to. I would also like to see a reduction in the noise produced
by the louder fireworks".
Mr Ottaway said that one of his biggest concerns is the impact that
fireworks has on animals.
"Many dogs, cats and horses get very distressed by the bangs from
fireworks and some animals should, if possible, be tranquillised to
help them cope with their fear. Clearly, this is not possible if night
after night loud fireworks are set off all over Croydon. There should
be a campaign to encourage people to buy fireworks only for use during
traditional celebrations".
Ends.
