PRESS RELEASE
15 January 2002
SOUTH CENTRAL TRAIN DELAYS INCREASE BY 131.7%, SAYS RICHARD OTTAWAY
MP
Croydon South MP Richard Ottaway has learnt that in the four weeks ending
7 December, South Central South London's train delays rose by 131.7 per
cent with only 50.3 per cent of all their trains arriving on time.
Richard Ottaway said:
"New figures compiled by the Conservative Party have revealed
that rail delays have soared since the Government forced Railtrack into
administration. These figures are very disappointing and shows what
an enormous task Labour has to make the railways work again.
"This is a problem of the Government's own making. Badly needed
private investment in the railways and elsewhere in our services is
now at risk since the shoddy way Labour pulled the plug on Railtrack".

Notes to Editors
The most recent statistics (see below) for the principal
train operating companies shows an astonishing leap in train delays since
the Government decided to suppress the nationally-collated figures. In
the most recent month (to 8 December for most companies), train delays
were substantially higher than for the preceding 11 months. The figures
were compiled by Conservatives, who contacted each individual train company.

Methodology:
1. Figures for % punctuality over the last 12 months and for the last
4 weeks were gathered from individual train companies. From this figures
could be calculated for average % punctuality over the previous 11 months
(before Railtrack was pushed into administration).
2. Figures for train punctuality were converted into train delays (100%
- % punctuality = % delays)
3. The percentage increase in delays was then calculated (comparing the
last 4 weeks to the previous 11 months).
