Ottaway announces Croydon's favourite nursery rhyme
'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ gets the highest vote
Richard Ottaway, Conservative MP for Croydon South, has announced the winner of a competition to nominate Croydon’s favourite nursery rhyme at a special Baby Rhymetime at Selsdon Library.
Richard said:
“I was delighted to be invited to Selsdon Library to mark National Bookstart Day. Bookstart is run by Booktrust, an independent charity which runs a national scheme giving children book packs in their early years and encouraging families and carers to share stories with their babies and children.
“Research has shown the importance of sharing books in leading to higher educational standards at primary school. Bookstart children have been found to have consistently higher levels of language and literacy development than the non-Bookstart children and to be statistically ahead in the reading task, reading comprehension, writing, spelling, mathematics, and science assessments at Key Stage 1
“All the families attending Selsdon Library Baby Rhymetime have received books from Bookstart and have been taking part in a competition to find the top ten rhymes in Croydon. Over 1000 votes were cast and ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ emerged the clear winner, with ‘Wind the Bobbin up’ coming in second place and ‘The Wheels on the Bus was third.”
