Ottaway questions Home Office on asylum seekers

Date Filed:  Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Richard Ottaway, Conservative MP for Croydon South, has tabled a number of serious questions to the Home Secretary on the decision to close the UK Border Agency’s asylum screening unit in Liverpool. This leaves Croydon as the only place in the country where ‘walk in’ asylum seekers can stake their claim.

Richard Ottaway said:

“This has all the hallmarks of a rushed decision. There has been no consultation and very little explanation. Under the circumstances I have tabled written questions to the Home Secretary asking:

• The reason for the decision

• What assessment has been made of the likely impact on Croydon and

• If the Government proposes financial compensation to Croydon Council for the inevitable cost of the additional demand on local services”
