National Citizen Service

Date Filed:  Tuesday, April 13, 2010

GE 2010 Campaign Bulletin – Conservative plans for a National Citizen Service

We have set out our plans for a National Citizen Service – a non-military national service. It will be a voluntary, two-month summer programme for 16 year-olds to come together in a common purpose, mix with people from different backgrounds and learn the meaning of social responsibility by serving their communities.
We will fund the initial two years of the phased national roll-out from the DCLG’s community cohesion programme, which has been strongly criticised by the Communities and Local Government Committee, chaired by a Labour MP. In the Spending Review in Autumn 2010, we will provide details of funding for further expansion. National Citizen Service will be a priority in this Spending Review.
